Who is Bella Nabivi? Could you briefly introduce yourself?
As the child of a journalist father and a piano teacher mother, I was born in Moscow and raised in Baku. I received my university education at SolBridge International Business School in South Korea.
How did you decide to pursue acting? Could you share your story with us?
I was born into the world of art. At home, my mother played the piano, and she used to take me to theater plays since my infancy. I would then reenact those plays at home in front of a mirror or for my parents. Once, I wrote a theater play for Mother's Day and rehearsed with my siblings for a month. We performed it in front of our relatives, and everyone's first question was, "Are you going to be an actress?" And that's how it all began.
What kind of childhood did you have?
I had a happy and loving childhood. My family supported me in all my decisions without any objections. If I am confident and strong today, I owe it to them. I was also a very active child. I started ballet at the age of 3, and then I constantly played the piano at home because of my mother. At the age of 5, I passed a special talent exam and got into the state piano school. I was passionately devoted to the piano because I fell in love with it. I used to practice relentlessly for 4-5 hours a day. I started playing famous classical pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Sebastian Bach, Chopin, etc., in concerts. At the same time, I was composing my own music and writing lyrics. It was my dream to enter the conservatory as a composer. Since my father traveled abroad constantly, I chose international business management for my university education, thinking that I would be by his side if I became a businesswoman.
So how did the transition to acting happen from there?
I was part of the theater club at school, and in university, the theater and music club became the place where I spent most of my time. Under the guidance of my drama teacher, I took drama classes for 2 years in South Korea. Then I started participating in various theater plays. When I came to Turkey, I took 2 years of on-camera acting training. I can say that the moments I feel happiest are when I am on stage.
What are your future goals in acting? Which characters would excite you the most to play?
So far, I have mostly been involved in theater plays both abroad and in Turkey. I have a cinema film that will be released soon. I recently signed on to a very promising film project, but I won't spoil it; it's going to create quite a buzz. I would like to be part of a project that combines action, dance, and fight scenes. I'm more drawn to scripts that resonate with me and feature complex characters. Playing a character who starts off as a villain but evolves into someone good, someone the audience sympathizes with, excites me. Generally, I want the audience to accept me as their daughter, granddaughter, or girlfriend. Even when I play someone sad, I like to reflect their strong, positive, hopeful sides to the audience. After all, life is hard, and I want to play a character that will positively impact people, guide them in the right direction, and linger in their minds.
Which is your favorite film and why?
Actually, I can find something relatable in most of the films I watch. So, I can't really single out one as my favorite. But when I think about it, many films come to mind. For instance, "The Pianist" is one of the films that has influenced me. The character played by Adrien Brody was one of the most promising concert pianists of the future, but suddenly finds himself struggling to survive in a world dominated by war. His story demonstrates the resilience within us and how art can nourish the human spirit. I believe "The Pianist" has a very touching story about music, hope, and human solidarity.
In your opinion, what should an actor be like?
First and foremost, they should be a good person. If tens of thousands of people follow us now, it will eventually grow to millions. I believe we should set an example for people through our work. The world is heading in a very negative direction, so it's important for us to promote positivity, goodness, and help. Even the smallest message we convey can have a huge impact on society. At the same time, an actor should be versatile. Education and personal development are, in my opinion, ongoing processes. The more we travel, read, and learn, the more we realize how little we know. An actor should know at least one foreign language, play a musical instrument, or take vocal training, or engage in different hobbies. Especially for us actors, the waiting period for projects can be a bit challenging. I believe it's important to stay psychologically strong.
As someone who grew up and studied abroad, how did your path intersect with Turkey and Turkish language?
I've been more than 26 countries. When I was flying to Korea, I had a layover at Atatürk Airport, but I had never seen Istanbul; there was always a lingering desire within me. When my education was over, I returned to Baku and started working there. Then I told everyone, including my family, that I wanted to go to Istanbul for a 10-day vacation. I came and never went back. I also have an interest in different languages. My mother tongue is Russian and Azerbaijani, and I had my education in English in primary school. While in Korea, I learned Korean. I actually learned Turkish from TV series. Besides acting classes in Turkey, I also took individual diction classes. Now I want to learn Spanish.
What do you do in your free time?
I absolutely love singing and dancing. I feel happy when I dance. I spend time with my favorite friends. I don't have many friends, and I'm very selective about them. I try to surround myself with quality, intellectual, and optimistic people. I watch a lot of movies and enjoy reading. If I'm not lazy, I do sports. Taking care of my skin and pampering myself are things that make me very happy because I don't really like wearing makeup in my daily life. I closely follow fashion, but I usually choose what suits me best.
What would you like to say to the readers?
They should never give up on their dreams, no matter what they do. Everything starts with dreaming. It might not happen today, but timing is crucial. They shouldn't focus on the outcome; they should enjoy the process. We can achieve anything we want in life. The key is to work hard with determination.
